Manufacturing Industry Employer

The Client:
A wire products manufacturing company with multiple locations. Employees with limited English comprise approximately 15% of their workforce. Employees are immigrants and refugees from multiple countries, including El Salvador, Guatemala and Laos.

The Challenge:

  • Written documents such as handbook, benefits package and policies were not understood by foreign-born employees.
  • Supervisors and managers lacked skills to communicate with employees.
  • Human resources personnel lacked skills to communicate with employees.
  • Employees with limited English lacked skills to communicate orally or in writing to complete job tasks. Essential job tasks include written reports on productivity and machine functioning; training other employees on equipment and reporting problems

The Solution:
To meet this company's short term goals, we translated documents used for essential employer-employee communication. To focus on the long term goals of impacting productivity by building communication skills, training included workplace-focused Spanish skills for human resource personnel and workplace-focused English skills for selected employees.

The Results:
Basic language skills led to increased productivity of human resources personnel. Improvement of spoken and written English skills in foreign workers led to increased ability to train others, increased productivity, and promotion.
